Designing automation interactions that run Amazon Fulfillment Centers

Designing automation interactions that run Amazon Fulfillment Centers

Amazon Robotics (AR) is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. In AR's approach, items are stored in large fulfillment centers (FCs). When an order is entered in Amazon, the software locates the closest robot to the item to retrieve it, maximizing efficiency by eliminating manual searching within the warehouse.

01

PRD Scoping

  • Collaborated with PMs, engineers, designers, and product owners to scope out product requirements.

  • Gained context on features, timelines, budget, and system scope.

  • Determined the business value of UX for each project.

02

User Research

  • Created research guides and travel to different sites to interview users.

  • Collaborated with relevant teams on-site to collect feedback on existing products.

03

Design Implementation

  • Used Figma and Amazon design systems to design solutions for 3 major products.

  • Collaborated with engineers to discuss the feasibility of design concepts and understand development constraints.

  • Validated final prototypes with the product owner before handing them off to engineers.

04

UX Writing

  • Wrote Amazon-standard content for internal products.

  • Crafted evaluation plans, feature proposals, templates, research plans, and other deliverables.

Teamwork

Internal tool

OVERVIEW

  • Owned the UX for an internal tool that optimized the delivery process of e-commerce orders.

  • Conducted on-site interviews and shadowed users at warehouses to gain deep insights into user workflows and pain points.

  • Developed task flows to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for UX enhancements, ensuring alignment with user needs.

  • Collaborated with the Product Manager to draft product requirements, translating qualitative user research into tactical design requirements that satisfy business needs.

  • Developed an information architecture (IA) that simplified complex workflows, improving user navigation and efficiency.

  • Iterated several prototypes to ensure the design vision was faithfully executed, maintaining consistency and usability.

  • The redesigned tool resulted in improved user efficiency and satisfaction, contributing to faster delivery times and smoother operations.

Informational site for internal employees

Informational site for internal employees

Managing a project of this scale is quite challenging.

OVERVIEW

  • Owned and shipped an internal site aimed at improving employee access to resources and information, from research and design to UX writing and development.

  • Conducted stakeholder mapping and interviews to understand the needs and priorities of different organizational stakeholders.

  • Created user story maps to define user journeys and identify key features that meet user and business needs.

  • Developed the information architecture to organize content in a way that was intuitive and easy to navigate.

  • Wrote clear and concise content to ensure users could quickly find and understand the information they needed.

  • Designed the user interface, focusing on usability and accessibility to enhance the overall user experience.

  • Learned to code source files for internal sites and successfully developed the design within two weeks.

  • Evaluated the final product through usability testing, ensuring it met both user expectations and business objectives.

The Fun Stuff

008

Everyday in my hybrid life

Everyday looks different than the other, some days I am designing and listening to songs while the other I am flying to research at FCs and working in flights.

Each day comes with its own challenges, working with external teams, explaining UX to stakeholders, scheduling team meetings, and so on.

Major Takeaway

Major Takeaway

"We work with the same designs and products indefinitely, and we become more aware of the very foundation of all interactions we create. Each design choice has to have intentionality and thought into it. No design is ever perfect."
